Photo 1: Pull the stem
Remove the handle. Then loosen the packing nut. Reinsert the plastic handle and unscrew out the entire stem.
Photo 2: Grease like there’s no tomorrow
Apply a generous amount of plumber’s grease to the threads. Then insert the stem and try it out. If it still squeals, add more grease. Then reassemble the packing nut and install the handle.
Outdoor frost-proof faucets eventually develop a squeal when you turn the handle. The brass stem threads are rubbing against the brass threads in the housing. If there’s a shutoff valve for the faucet, close it. Otherwise, shut off the main valve. To get rid of the squeal, apply a dollop of plumber’s grease.
