Instead of constantly bending over to pick up unwanted fallen apples around my tree, I bought a frog spear head at my local sporting goods store. I screwed it onto the threaded end of an old broom handle and began spearing away. I discovered I could spear more than one downed apple at a time, too! I also found that mashing the smaller apples with my foot first made spearing them more successful. — Dan Zambon
What makes a frog spear great for picking up fallen apples is its small tines and the fact that it’s inexpensive (we found one for about $3), but you could also attach an old grilling fork or even a pocket knife to the end of an extension pole to create a similar tool.
